"Clair de Lune" from Claude Debussy's Fêtes Galantes
Performed at the Senior Recital of Benjamin Gonczi, Tenor (11/30/22). Joined by Andrea DeVito, Piano.
One of my favorite French Impressionist pieces, Clair de Lune utilizes text by Arthur Rimbaud, a counter-cultural French Symbolist poet with a rich queer history. Claude Debussy would go on to set text by both Rimbaud and his estranged lover, Paul Verlaine, sending an undeniably queer echo out in to the art song repertory.
