Whimsical and almost snarky in nature, organist William Mathias' choral setting of A Babe is Born is a doozy and a half. With rhythmically offset figures and program-music-like storytelling in the piano, and uncomfortable, unrelated chord resolutions executed by the voices, this piece is deceptively challenging to perform; it is, however, good fun no matter what!
