Teaching Texture & Dissonance - Kinesthetic and Aural modes of instruction

I wrote this lesson plan for the acapella choir at Robert Morgan Education Center in Cutler Bay, FL. I wanted to work on the recognition of important vocal lines and dissonances, and how one can use this skill to be musical. Piece rehearsed - Light in the Hallway arr. Mae, Hoying, Grassi.

Teaching text analysis and its influence on musical decisions - difficult yet necessary classroom conversations

I wrote this lesson plan for the top choir at Robert Morgan Education Center in Cutler Bay, FL. The ensemble is preparing to sing Kim Andre Arnesen's "Even When He is Silent" at a concert at Carnegie Hall, and I felt that it was incredibly necessary to speak with the choir regarding the origins of the text to which Arnesen set his music. The class dicussed the history of the Holocaust, their individual interpretations of the poetry, connections they were able to make to current events, and how they could use the emotional connections they made to influence their musical decisions.
